Recognizing Value

Recognizing Value
Discovering your value and purpose as a mom.

Behind closed doors….

Away from Bible study or church….

Away from a past career…..

Away from friends…..

Away from a husband who is faithfully working to provide……..

The day is before me….. I am a mom.

Routine tasks of motherhood can seem unimportant.
Routine tasks of motherhood can seem unimportant.

I question. I wrestle with competing ideas. I live in an era where “living out your dreams” is a prized individualistic trait. At any adult get together, the idea of dedicating time on this planet to a life of service ranks very low on “career path small talk”.

I question. I wrestle with purpose. In my mind, I list the tasks of my day. They are the same as the day before…. and the day before that……. and the day before that. They are mundane tasks that form the routine of this season of life dotted with unexpected messes and minor emergencies.

I breathe. No one but my children will see what I do next. And yet, my next action will show the world what I believe and recognize as valuable.  I am about to sow a hidden seed which will not be seen for years.

I ponder. I think of the cross with its cruelty and unimaginable suffering. In movies and liturgy, this moment has been named the “passion”. However, the cross was NOT His passion. In fact, He prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me;” But He did not stop there, He continued to pray and plant a seed of passion  “..nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” It was a seed that would grow and blossom in the lives of all who would believe.

I think again. So what moved Jesus from the garden to the cross?

I realize. His dedication to His Father and His passion for me. I am His passion. You are His passion. Each simple placement of Jesus’ foot in front of the other to the cross announced to the world, I matter to Him.

I am His passion. You are His Passion. The idea of eternity with me and you moved Jesus to complete the work of the cross.

The idea of eternity with me moved Jesus to complete the work of the cross.

I ask. What will move me in my tasks today? Love begins to sharpen my myopic vision. I enter the world of different values.

I remember. I remember a cup of water.

“And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” Matthew 10:42

A cup of water is ordinary. The cup of water given to a little disciple becomes extraordinary and is ranked high in the Kingdom of God.
No mundane act of service is ever unnoticed in God’s Kingdom.

A cup of water is ordinary. The cup of water given to a little disciple becomes extraordinary and is ranked high in the Kingdom of God. No mundane act of service is ever unnoticed in God’s Kingdom. No task is unimportant. Diapering a baby, preparing nutritious food, reading to sleepy children, lovingly engaging in disciplining matters of the heart, cleaning up spilled milk, providing clean clothes, all have value when I do it for God’s little disciples, my children.

I decide. Today, I will sow the seeds of eternity and recognize the value of God’s economy despite a world that shouts a conflicting message.

I observe. Universally, God’s value of what is important rests nestled in the heart of every human being.  Many never see it until the last breath.

For no one ever said on their deathbed…

I wish I had received one more promotion, earned more money, or become famous.

What is more often said……

I wish I listened more intently, loved more deeply, and rested more completely.

I pray. Lord, I am blind. I want  to see what is important to you. No one but you and my children will see what I do, or how I do it.  Help me to sow a seed that will last forever. I  don’t expect a thank you from my six year boy, my teenage son, or my toddler. But when I see a content smile or giggle, help me to hear your words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” That is good enough for me.

I open my bedroom door.

The busyness of children swirls through the rooms of our home.

Nothing has changed…..but me.

I quietly say to myself,

“This is the day the Lord has made,

and I will be glad and rejoice in it.”

I smile.
