Creating a Positive Culture for Writing
What are the values that set a foundation for homeschool writing success? There are ten values that create a foundation for homeschool writing success. (See picture below) We create a culture for writing when we put these values into action.
This week we will explore Value #1
Value every step of the writing process.
The “how” of writing is summed up in the writing process. Each step needs to be taught, modeled, and valued until it becomes a well-formed habit.
- Brainstorm-How to generate ideas
- Make a List- How to gather information
- Webbing-Organizing ideas
- First Rough Draft-Dictating or Writing a less than perfect paper
- First Input-Learn how to receive input on what you have written
- Second Rough Draft-Learning how to revise
- Second Input-Correct grammar and spelling
- Final Recopy-Learn how to present your writing
- Publish-Learn how to share your writing
An HTHL mom called me and just had to share a moment of joy that happened in her homeschool. Her son is in seventh grade and had been using HTHL’s Writing program since he was in second grade. He had graduated HTHL’s program when he was in sixth grade and was ready for new writing challenges. His new junior high writing teacher gave him an assignment, and her son tackled it like a pro. Nonchalantly, this young man handed his paper to his mom and said, “I already brainstormed, made a list, and webbed my project. Here’s my first rough draft can you PIP it (Praise-Input-Praise feedback) for me? The excited mom told me, “It works! HTHL really works!” Her son moved through the writing process with ease and confidence.
I applaud this family because through the formative years they valued every step of the writing process, and it became ingrained in the fabric of their family. I love how the mom described the way he handed her the paper! To this young man, it was no big deal, just a matter-of-fact way to approach a writing project.
It’s often tempting to skip a step in the writing process. Please don’t. Each step is vital to producing stellar writing results. By giving your student time to complete each step, you are creating a culture for writing in your home. By engaging in the writing process for every writing project you are forming a writing habit that will last a lifetime.

“What’s a homeschool mom to do? I tried different curriculums. I tried assigning some of the more popular assignments that I used when I taught in the public school classroom. I tried allowing them to dictate their assignments to me. I tried breaking the assignments down into very small pieces, showing them how to do each one. Nothing worked well, or any positive effects didn’t last long. Here to Help Learning is a great addition to our homeschool curriculum, and it is definitely helping my children to develop an excitement about writing.”-Jennifer J.
