Welcome flip flop season! Here in the state of Washington, summer arrives a little later than most of the USA, but I’m enjoying the wildflowers and bursts of sun rays that seem to be a little more frequent. This week starts our ten-week Summer Writing Fun series, yes, I did say FUN writing. Each week there will be a new project that you can do together as a family or let your kids take charge. Keep scrolling down for more…
Summer Writing Fun
How do you keep your child practicing and enjoying the skill of writing during the summer break? This summer, HTHL’s Writing Tip of the Week will feature 10 fun ideas to keep your child writing!
Summer Writing Project# 1
This Week’s Summer Writing Idea…The Treasure Hunt
- Brown paper bag- cut so that it lays flat
- Rocks painted different colors
- Small papers and string
Choose two players or two teams.
One player/team is the “pirate” who buries the treasure. The other is the “treasure hunter.”
- Draw a map of an area. This can be your backyard or park.
- Bury painted rocks (aka:the treasure).
- Mark on the map where the treasure is buried.
- Use small papers to write clues for the treasure hunters. Roll the papers and tie with a string. Number the scrolls and give to the treasure hunter.
Treasure Hunter’s Job-Follow the clues to uncover the treasure!
Once the treasure hunter finds the all the treasure, switch roles.
Treasure hunts are fun and can keep a kid writing during the summer!

“Here to Help Learning’s Writing Program is perfect for the family or group class in need of an enthusiastic instructor. The courses are very easy-to-use and enjoyable for both students and adults. They also make it possible to teach children together if they are within a few grade levels of one another. The Christian aspects of the course—memory verses, mentions of faith and God throughout the courses, and activities that stress Christianity in action—are more thoroughly and effectively integrated than in most other Christian writing courses.”–Cathy Duffy (Curriculum Review)
